COUNT intersection volume calculator, Department of Transport and Main Roads

COUNT, an Excel and VBA intersection volume calculator built for the Department of Transport and Main Roads on the Gold Coast, turning manual intersection counts and the regional traffic census into current-year design volumes.

The work

The Volume Calculator holds an intersection library by year, applies a growth factor for the design year and computes turning-movement totals, percentage commercial vehicles per approach and pedestrian counts per leg and hour, with a lookup into the census library.

A manual intersection-count sheet records cars, trucks, buses and cyclists for eight movements and three pedestrian movements in 15-minute intervals over a 12-hour day, and derives the 12-hour totals and the AM and PM peak hours.

The census library holds 323 count workbooks dated 1999–2003 for the region's intersections. The work sat within 2002–2004 traffic engineering for the department at Nerang, which also covered signal analysis and in-house signal-timing tools.
