Basin-wide environmental-monitoring GIS and web map

A basin-wide GIS of past and current environmental monitoring for a Central Queensland natural resource management body, delivered as GIS subconsultant to the head environmental consultant: an ArcGIS Pro workspace, Python automation, 76 standardised layers, a shared ArcGIS Online web map and a print-ready map series.

The work

The natural resource management body needed one basin-wide picture of where environmental monitoring has been carried out and where it is missing, aligned to its regional natural-asset targets, so that monitoring gaps could be found and future condition reporting planned.

The GIS workspace was built from public data, integrating about 30 spatial layers across air, soil, freshwater, groundwater, land ecosystems and stakeholder activity. The 49 monitoring datasets supplied as KMZ files were converted to shapefile and GeoJSON, reprojected to GDA2020, and their programme metadata — title, agency, status, frequency and dates, which an ordinary KMZ import loses — recovered into a single register.

Nine documented Python scripts automate the conversion, reprojection and metadata extraction and query the Queensland open-data and spatial-catalogue services, so the work can be repeated by the next analyst.

Delivered: 76 spatial layers standardised to GDA2020 as shapefile, GeoJSON and CSV with the metadata register; an ArcGIS Online web map with a layer group for each natural-asset theme and 18 public reference layers; stakeholder monitoring data combined, georeferenced and published to the map; and print-ready A4 maps for six themes — air, soils, land, freshwater, groundwater and coastal — with the GIS results and digital-methods sections of the project report.
